The toll road shutdown essentially prevented commuters in Fort Lee from getting access to the George Washington Bridge and to major highways. It resulted in schoolbuses being stranded–and email and text exchanges have Christie staffers joking that its ok, because the kids were all supporters of Christie’s Democratic opponent in the fall election. Emergency vehicles were also impeded, delayed in responding to at least three emergency calls. Christie already had a reputation as a bully, and Jersey politics are historically cut-throat in any event.
The bully reputation in some ways helped the image he was trying to burnish, as a no-nonsense bridge builder between Republicans and Democrats who can get things done. However, this gambit, if it links back to Christie, will clearly push the bullying image over the top. It also appears that some laws may have been broken. There was no question that Christie would win–but he was after a strong showing of bi-partisan support. As of now, the Fort Lee mayor is the only one who has a story of actual revenge and retribution.
