I paid the check and we were about to leave when my mother-in-law started dumping the rolls from the table into her purse. I protested quietly telling her that I’d get us a take out box. She said it was a waste. People around us were starting to notice. I whispered that we didn’t need the rolls, we had plenty of good food for her visit. She started arguing with me as if she was going to make a scene. My wife implored me with her eyes to just let it go, which I was going to do.
My mother-in-law came to visit us for an extended stay. I cannot now recall if she was supposed to stay for a week or a month. The story is more shocking if I tell you that we were in New Jersey and she drove up from her home in Florida. However, in retrospect, I’m glad that she also visited several other family members in New York before visiting us. We were to be her last stopover before returning home.
