My male is also around 8. I got him at age 4. He was in a hoarding situation. The woman had too many dogs. He was food aggressive at first, I finally broke him of that and can feed both dogs in the kitchen at the same time. He doesn’t do well meeting new dogs, but is ok after a few meetings and gets along fine with my female. He is a cuddler, will sit in your lap as long as you want him there. He’s been more difficult to train and is afraid of loud noises and doesn’t like car rides. He will work for food, so he does sit to command now and some others. Will scratch at the door to go potty. Not a watch dog. Doesn’t seem to care who comes into my house to visit or do some work. Hardly ever barks. Likes older kids, but snaps at young ones. He’s also a great companion and the two of them play together sometimes and keep each other company. Both sleep with me all night, neither is crate trained. They have the run of the house when I’m gone. They’ve never chewed anything up or gotten into the trash.

They do require frequent haircuts as their hair grows fast. You have to brush it if you keep it long. They don’t require a great deal of exercise, but we go for a walk twice a day and have play time in the evening. Mine are pretty calm dogs. I think they are fantastic dogs. Very similar looking breeds as puppies, but the main indicator is the nose. There is a swirl of hair around it’s circumference that varies slightly from the Lhasa. Also note that the Shih-Tzu’s “eyebrows” are more open and expressive in comparison to the Lhasa-Apso, giving the Shih-Tzu a more rounded looking head. I also think Shih-Tzu’s look like grumpy old men in the cutest way ever. The rule is to bathe your dog with shampoo and conditioner once a month since their skin has essential oils so over-bathing increases the chance of infection.
