It was 9:30am, one week before college graduation. I had gotten back to my dorm early that day, after spending the night at my boyfriends place. It was May, the sun was shining and all was right with the world. I showered before my first class and was trotting back to my room when I saw my boyfriends mother in my doorway. Funny, I thought, “why would she visit me on campus?” I bounced down the hallway with my hair in a towel and wearing my robe. I gave a joyous “Hi There!” as I invited her into my room. And there say my boyfriend, on my bed. First words out of his mouth were, “Your brother died.” In shock, I said, “Which one?!” At the time I had a full brother, a half brother and a step brother. The next line brought me to tears immediately. “Sean”.
A police cruiser’s backseat after being stopped by an officer. We knew each other in high school, I had a huge crush on her, but being a super nerd, never thought she, a cheerleader, and a year ahead, even knew I existed. She had seen me leave work, got on the highway, pulled me over to say hi. Didn’t realize she damn near gave me heart failure. We talked for a bit, she gave me her card, told me to call her so we could actually catch up.
