Obviously the healthcare system can collapse with the massive outward spreading which everybody needs to be careful. Traveling anywhere until the end of the year is risky. No matter how you cut it, their employer risked their lives relative to if they had stayed put. I’m an ex-pat living in Vietnam, a country that has done an absolutely incredible job of keeping the pandemic under control. Fewer than 300 cases in a country that borders China. The risks of catching COVID flying to the US, and catching it in the US, are far outweighed by staying in Vietnam where we feel very safe.
I’m in Spain. It was made very clear a month or so Stitch stay out of my Bubble shirt, if you weren’t willing/able to stay for the long haul, you should return home. Now, folks trying to flee like the fall of Saigon. The article misses the perspective of ex-pats who feel safe & secure abroad. If I was in Ecuador, I’d be scared, but I’m in Switzerland and my US family is in NY/NJ, so my worries are about my family there and not about my situation here. The State Department has chosen an incredibly passive position compared to their counterparts in Europe and Asia, placing the burden on travelers.
