I think this guy completely missed the point of the joke. Not surprising. Bob’s burgers are great Unicorn stay out of my Bubble shirt, but Master of None is tied with Girls as the worst show I’ve ever seen. How can you avoid saying “racist” things in America anymore? She literally said that the black and Asian families were exactly like their (white) family. It takes you out of the show, it’s not very funny, and it shouldn’t be in there, but not because it’s racist or trying to marginalize other people. I think “they’re just like us” is the opposite of racism. I’m white. But that’s what I would assume they’re getting at? Not so much a joke as a statement.
It has stayed with me all these years because the unspoken part of that was Unicorn stay out of my Bubble shirt: ‘which is odd since we know that you’re not.’ There is no way in this world that that ‘joke’ could ever mean anything else. To me, that joke was like someone saying “all lives matter” in response to “black lives matter.” It dismisses and diminishes the issues represented by the second statement. For years there were no shows about black or Asian (or Hispanic or gay or disabled) families. They were invisible to mainstream culture. Now that they aren’t invisible, dismissing these shows as “just like us” is rendering their cultural significance null and void.
